Welcome to Centsable Savings Stories and Struggles! This week, Shannon from For the Mommas is sharing her story. Shannon shared with me that she cried as she wrote her story, and, when you read it, I think you’ll see why. She truly pours out her heart, explaining how frugality has not only changed her spending habits but also her outlook on life.

If you’d like to share your story, I’d love to hear from you. Please email me at centsable.katherine[at]gmail.com. More details are at the end of this post.

Next week, we’ll be taking a break from CentsAble Saving Stories for Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the time with your family and friends!

There was a time in my life where I had to have the most expensive brands. I would spend money without thinking about it. I figured we are saving a good percentage of our salary, not going into debt and paying all our bills on time, so why not spend the rest? I lived by that motto for many years. The result of that type of spending was lots of material stuff and many housrs worked outside of my home to pay for it.

Fast forward to 2007. My son was beginning kindergarten, and I wanted to be able to take him to school and pick him up from the bus. It wasn’t going to be possible with my current work schedule. I worked from 8am until 7pm, sometimes later. We had just purchased a large home and had a brand new, expensive car. It was then I realized nothing was going to change unless I reevaluated our life. I reasoned and rationalized with myself and went back and forth. I struggled with the fact that I worked so hard to get my MBA, and I wanted to use it. I felt entitled to the finer things!
As my son got a little further into the school year, I knew this wasn’t right. He would never remember that he had Mini Boden instead of Target pants on when he was five years old. However, he would remember Mommy was never around.
I scaled back my hours and took a pay cut. I was able to be home by 3:45, but still found myself ignoring him while I wrapped up business until 6-7pm. By the end of his kindergarten year, I knew it had to change. I decided to quit my job.

How was I going to do this on just my husband’s salary? Well, the key was we weren’t going to be able to keep doing what we were doing. I started clipping coupons, reading frugal blogs, shopping sales, going to the Goodwill and requesting freebies. I decided that I needed to figure out how to feed my family on $40.00 a week. I started finding free things for my family to do instead of expensive outings. I learned to be a better steward of God’s blessings, something I had taken for granted for so long.

I became a whole new person. My frugality has not only changed what brand clothes I wear, the car I drive and how much I spend on groceries, it has changed me as a person. I am no longer defined by things, I am defined as who I am as a person. I may shop at the Goodwill and hunt down a good grocery bargain, but beyond that being frugal has allowed me to be a be at home with my child and, therefore, a better Mommy.
I started blogging at For The Mommas because I wanted to give other Moms who might be in our situation an opportunity to see that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You don’t have to starve to stay home with your kids. You don’t have to give up everything. More importantly, you can still enjoy living while sticking to a budget!

Each week I feature a different shopper’s story. Centsable Savings Stories are the stories of people just like you who are working toward reducing their budgets, bargain hunting, living a more frugal lifestyle and constantly learning along the way. If you are interested in sharing your family’s successes and struggles, please contact me at centsable.katherine[at]gmail [dot]com. Bloggers and non-bloggers are both welcome to participate. Click here to read the stories of shoppers featured in the past.

Last week I shared several ways to save a bundle on your new bundle of joy. Here’s one more.

As I mentioned in last week’s article, cribs and car seats are not the best candidates to be handed down or purchased second-hand due to safety concern. Frequently, new cribs are recalled as well. See the photo of the crib above? It might look safe, but it has been recalled.

According to the Toys “R” Us press release, less than 30% of recalled items are returned. The rest likely remain in circulation. To encourage parents to return unsafe items, Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us recently announced their “Great Trade In” event where you can get a 20% off coupon for turning in a used piece of baby equipment to the store.

This program runs from August 28th through September 20th, and the best news is that any crib, car seat, bassinet, stroller, travel system, play yard or high chair can be returned to the store, no matter how old it is and no matter whether it was recalled or not.

In exchange for returning these items, you will get a coupon for 20% off of a new baby item to be used in any of the same product categories, from select manufacturers.

I encourage you to sort through your baby items and definitely take advantage of this deal if you still have a recalled item in your possession.

You can read the full press release here and search for recalled items here.

A huge thanks to Tracie from Kansas City Penny Pinchin’ Mama for passing this tip along.

The bizarre pizza deals just keep coming.

If you’d rather have a free Papa John’s pizza instead of a utility bill credit and you happen to own a Camaro, check out Tracie’s post here or Kristi at More Than Cent’s post here. I think I’ve reached my quota of posting weird pizza deals for a while! :)
