To get in the holiday spirit, we have two Gift Card giveaways for you this week and next!
This week, we’re giving you a $100 Home Depot gift card! Yes, you! Well, if you enter that is!
The lovely folks at Home Depot contacted us this week to offer this giveaway and we jumped at the opportunity to make someone’s Christmas a little brighter!
No, Home Depot didn’t start selling food BUT as you know, we are a little bit eco-friendly here at BeCentsAble and have featured several articles on saving money on your utilities while being green. Now that the weather has turned cold many of you are likely turning up the heat in your homes.
Home Depot is a great place to pick up some supplies to help you hold on to some of your money this winter and conserve energy resources.
The Home Depot gift cards are a great idea for the do-it-herselfers and handymen on your gift lists.
This year they’ve even made them interactive! The Home Depot has 17 holiday gift card styles to choose from including a scratch-n-sniff gingerbread man that can be decorated with stickers and a card that looks and feels like it is covered with the handyman’s wrapping paper – duct tape!
The contest runs from tomorrow, Thursday 12/4 to midnight Wednesday 12/10
To be entered to win you must leave a comment on our blog this week on any post!
You can enter to win multiple times by leaving multiple comments!
Our only restriction is that the comments be relevant to the post you are leaving them on. We reserve the right to exclude irrelevant comments from the drawing.

Since it’s a holiday week, we’re taking an unofficial break from our regular features.
We thought it might be nice to have one of the bloggers behind Tuesday’s ‘Green Space’ feature here at BeCentsAble more formally introduce herself.
You’ve read several of Katherine’s posts already, and as she gets more involved with BeCentsAble in the future, you will get to know her even better.

I joined the BeCentsAble team at the end of September as a contributor to the Green Space feature. My goal in writing that post is to help people take steps to making more eco-friendly choices while not busting their budgets. At the end of October, I took over managing the Grocery Gathering. We’re working hard to make our most popular feature user friendly, useful and up-to-date.
I’ve always been frugal and eco-concsious. As a kid, I spent many recesses out at the recycling center sorting my community’s recycling, and I petitioned the school board to replace our styrofoam lunch trays with a more environmentally-friendly option. Since becoming a stay at home mom, I’ve been seeking ways to apply eco-friendly options to our home. I’m also a frugal person by nature–my husband and I have always lived by the principle of spending less than we earn. We are constantly looking for ways to reduce our spending even more, not because we need to but because we can. When we spend less, we can give more. As a Christian, I feel called to be a good steward of both the earth and of the money the Lord provides. Several months ago, my search for ways to cut our grocery bill led me to this blog and my shopping hasn’t been the same since! I am especially interested in making changes that are both eco- and budget-friendly. Fortunately, those two interests often work together.
On a more personal note, I am married to my high school sweetheart and the mother of a cute little girl. My husband and I have been married for almost 6 years. I left a career in special education to stay home with our 18-month-old daughter full time. Taking care of her is the best job I’ve ever had. We’re very blessed.

I discovered Borax when we began cloth diapering our oldest son in 2005. It’s an essential part of our washing routine that we’re still successfully using with our triplets’ cloth diapers today — Method or Seventh Generation detergent and a tablespoon or so of Borax in the detergent compartment of our front-loader, 1/4 cup of vinegar in the rinse, on hot with an extra rinse. It wasn’t long before we began using it for a variety of household tasks. Out of necessity, we learned that boosting our regular laundry with Borax removes all traces of cat urine smell, a trick that works on upholstery fabric as well. Now, Borax has multiple rolls in our home, from dish washing detergent standby (2 tablespoons Borax and 2 tablespoons baking powder is all you need to run a load of dishes) to a quick, powerful toilet cleaner (allow 1/4 cup to sit for 10-15 minutes).
What makes Borax so eco-friendly? It’s a naturally occurring mineral composed of sodium, boron, oxygen and water. It’s not harmful to washing machines, plumbing or septic tanks and does not contain phosphates or chlorine. Borax is used as a natural laundry booster, multipurpose cleaner, fungicide, preservative, insecticide, herbicide, disinfectant, dessicant, and ingredient in making ‘play slime’.
What makes Borax a frugal superstar and a must-have for your green cleaning arsenal? A huge box costs about $2.50.
If you have some extra Borax or need an activity on a rainy day, make slime!
Ingredients
White craft glue
2 cups, small bowls, or other containers
Food coloring
Water
Borax
Small plate or dish
Spoon
Tablespoon measure
Instructions
Fill one container with water, add a spoonful of the Borax and stir. Fill the other container with about 1/2 inch of glue.
Add three tablespoons of water to the glue and stir. Add a few drops of food coloring and stir again.
Add two tablespoons of the Borax solution from step #1 and stir well. Watch the slime form!
Lift out the spoon with the slime and place it on the dish. Let it sit for about 30 seconds and then pull it off the spoon and play with it!
Keep your slime in a tightly closed plastic bag when you are not playing with it.
Please join us every Tuesday for our Green Space feature where we share tips for going green on a budget and more green cleaning recipes.
